Our First SPRY Event!

Sunday, September 28, 2026, CSO Sue and CNO Steve hosted our very first Spry event.

The first in a series, this “Stories, Smiles and Memories” program topic was “Food For Thought: The Stuff We Ate“, and was co-sponsored by Edgewater Village Chicago (evchicago.org) and hosted by the Edgewater Branch of the Chicago Public Library.

A Brief History of the TV Dinner

For almost two hours, we shared stories about the foods we enjoyed (and didn’t like so much) when we were kids. From TV Dinners to the craziest candies. Steve reminisced about going to the neighborhood, family-owned grocery store and later to big supermarkets that replaced them. Sue brought back memories of sweet treats from the past, from Chuckles (did anyone ever eat the black ones?), to Pixie Stix. She even had some treats for us, including a pack of Teaberry gum (we watched the commercial fror the 60’s where they did the Teaberry Shuffle).

You can download the handout here.

We played “The Price Was Right“: where you had to guess the 1965 price for items like a can of Campbell’s Chicken Noodle Soup, or the pack of Teaberry gum.

The next Spry event will be Friday, October 23, at 2:00 PM at the Edgewater Liibrary. The theme will be “Games, Hobbies and Collectibles: The Stuff We Did For Fun.” If you live in the Chicago area, especially anywhere near the Edgewater community, stop by and remember with us!

  1. The September event at the Library was so much FUN! I had no idea what the content or format would be! I want us to have at least PART of an hour talking about old T. V. shows, 1961 and later, and about a few good movies: Psycho, Goldfinger, Mad Mad World, The Blues Brothers, Jaws, Excorist, 2001 A Space Oddisy.

    1. Thanks Steve for your input. We’ve already got our next one planned and hope you’ll join for that one.

Movies and TV will be on tap for future events and we’ll devote a whole hour+ to each of them.

      Sue Garvey
